Cost to Replace One Window, and Why It Costs More
What four cost guides report for replacing a single window, side by side, and why one window can cost more per unit than a job of ten.
Replacing one window typically costs several hundred dollars to about $1,400 installed, depending on the guide you read 14. Fixr reports $450 to $1,200 for one window, with an average of about $800 (updated January 21, 2026) 1. This Old House says it costs $700 on average to replace one window with a window from a top replacement brand (June 23, 2026) 3, while its homeowner survey found an average of $517 per installed window (August 11, 2026) 2. Modernize reports a national average of $1,047 per window, with a typical range of $700 to $1,400 (September 22, 2026) 4.
A single window can cost more per unit than the same window in a job of ten. Part of an installer's cost is the same whether the crew installs one window or many: the measuring visit, ordering, the trip, setup and cleanup. On a one-window job, that fixed part falls on one window. The sections below show the figures side by side and what you can do about it.
Single-window figures, side by side
| Source (date) | What the figure is | Reported cost |
|---|---|---|
| Fixr (January 21, 2026) | Cost range for 1 window; average per window | $450 to $1,200; $800 1 |
| This Old House (June 23, 2026) | Average for one window, top brand, repair guide | $700 3 |
| This Old House (August 11, 2026) | Average per installed window, homeowner survey | $517 2 |
| Modernize (September 22, 2026) | National average per window; typical range | $1,047; $700 to $1,400 4 |
Why the figures differ
The guides measure different things. This Old House's $517 comes from its 2026 survey of 1,000 homeowners who completed a window replacement project, where the average project cost $7,183 and replaced an average of seven windows 2. So that average describes a window inside a larger job, not a window replaced on its own.
Modernize says its average is based on 1,061,338 homeowner projects and includes materials ($897) and labor ($149) 4. Fixr labels its one-window figure as a range for a single window 1. Each guide also mixes window sizes, types and frame materials differently. The how the cost surveys differ article explains the methods in more detail.
Why one window can cost more per unit
Fixed costs land on one window
A window company spends time and money on every job before any glass goes in: a visit to measure the opening, ordering a window made to that size, driving a crew and tools to the house, protecting floors, and hauling away the old unit. Most of that does not grow much with the window count. On a ten-window job, it is spread over ten windows; on a one-window job, it is not. Some companies may set a minimum charge per job, so ask whether a quote includes one.
The guides describe the same effect from the other side. Fixr says many installers offer a discount per window when you replace several, and that a larger job may bring bulk discounts and discounted trip fees 1. Its buyer's guide says it can be more cost effective for the contractor to replace many windows at a single home, and that some of the difference may be passed to the customer 6. This Old House says some contractors offer package pricing or lower per-window installation costs for larger projects 2, and Modernize says contractors often offer bulk pricing or reduced labor rates on multi-window jobs 4.
What the labor figures show
One guide puts numbers on the labor side. Fixr's fiberglass guide (July 11, 2024) lists installation labor per window by the number of windows 5:
| Windows in the job | Labor per window |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | $100 to $150 5 |
| 5 to 9 | $90 to $140 5 |
| 10 to 19 | $85 to $130 5 |
| 20 or more | $80 to $125 5 |
Fixr notes these figures do not include removing the old windows 5. The gap between the smallest and largest jobs in that table is $20 to $25 per window in labor (our subtraction of the table's figures) 5, small next to the window itself. The bigger per-unit difference on a single window, when there is one, may come from the fixed costs above rather than the hourly work.
Not every guide shows a discount. Fixr's table by window count runs from $450 to $1,200 for one window to $2,250 to $12,000 for five to ten 1. The five-to-ten row is the one-window range multiplied by five and by ten, so the table itself does not build in a volume discount 1. For whole-house totals, see cost to replace windows in a house.
Before you replace one window
A single failing window does not always need a new one. The cheaper fixes depend on what is wrong:
- Fogged glass or a cracked pane. The glass unit can often be replaced alone; see window glass replacement cost and foggy window between panes.
- A stuck, drafty or rotted sash. If the frame is sound, a new sash may be enough; see window sash replacement.
- A broken latch, cord or balance. These are repairs; the window repair cost article lists what they cost.
If the frame itself is rotted, out of square or leaking, a full replacement is usually the comparison to make. Window frame replacement cost covers that line.
Ways to make a one-window job price fairly
- Ask for the line items. A quote should show the window, labor, removal and disposal, trim and any minimum charge separately. The how to compare window quotes article has a template.
- Ask about matching. One new window next to old ones may differ in color, grille pattern or sightlines. Ask whether the company can match the existing style, and what that adds.
- Group the work if you can. If other windows are close to the end of their life, asking for a quote on one window and on several lets you see the per-window difference for your own house, instead of relying on national averages.
- Ask how the window will be installed. An insert that sits inside the old frame and a full-frame replacement are priced differently; see full-frame vs insert replacement.
- Ask about the company. Is the installer licensed where you live? Who handles a warranty claim on a single window? The how to choose a window installer guide lists the rest.
For every cost driver in one place, read the window replacement cost guide. When you know which window and what is wrong with it, you can compare quotes from window installers.
