Window Glass Replacement Cost: Replacing the Pane, Not the Window

Replacing only the glass in a window often costs a few hundred dollars, per cost surveys. When glass-only work is possible, fogged glass explained, and survey figures.

Replacing only the glass in a window usually costs a few hundred dollars, well under the price of a new window. Angi reports a national average of $285 per window for glass replacement, with most homeowners paying $181 to $414, based on 13,612 projects (updated September 17, 2026) 1. HomeGuide reports $300 to $650 per window on average, with a national average of $475 and a range from $150 to over $1,500 (February 3, 2026) 2. HomeAdvisor reports $180 to $410 to replace a windowpane (updated June 17, 2026) 3.

Glass-only work is possible when the frame and sash are sound and a matching glass unit can be made. When the frame is rotted or warped, or the window is a custom or sealed assembly, the surveys point to a full replacement instead, which HomeGuide puts at $450 to $1,500 per window 5; see the window replacement cost guide.

Angi bases its figure on projects reported by its pros and a survey of over 10,000 customers, paired with Bureau of Labor Statistics data and other research 1. The ranges overlap but differ; HomeGuide's full range runs from $150 to over $1,500 depending on window size, style and glass type 2.

Can you replace just the glass?

Often, yes. HomeGuide says glass can be replaced in most windows without replacing the frame or sash, and that it works well when the frames are structurally sound 2. It also names the limits:

  • Sealed units in older or discontinued windows. Many double- and triple-pane windows use factory-sealed insulated glass units. HomeGuide says that if the seal fails, a compatible replacement may not be available for older or discontinued models, which can make a sash or full window replacement necessary 2.
  • Bay, bow, curved windows and skylights. HomeGuide says glass-only replacement is uncommon for these because they often rely on custom or sealed assemblies, and doing it may compromise weatherproofing or void warranties 2.
  • Damaged frames. If the frame is rotted, warped or damaged, HomeGuide says replacing the whole window avoids later problems 2.

Is it cheaper to replace the glass or the whole window?

Glass alone is usually the smaller bill. HomeGuide says replacing only the glass usually costs 30% to 70% less than a full window replacement, which it puts at $450 to $1,500 per window 25. Fixr reports about $800 per window on average for a full replacement 6.

The comparison is not only about price. A new window replaces the frame, sash, seals and hardware too; new glass in an old frame keeps whatever condition the frame is in. If the frame is sound and the only problem is the glass, glass-only work fits. If the window also sticks, leaks air or shows rot, see repair or replace windows and window sash replacement.

Fogged glass between the panes

An insulated window has two or three panes separated by a spacer, with the gap sealed and often filled with an inert gas such as argon. DOE's consumer guide says spacers keep the panes the correct distance apart to reduce heat flow and help prevent condensation 7. When the seal around the edge fails, moist air gets into the gap, and fog or droplets form between the panes, where you cannot wipe them away. HomeGuide lists condensation between panes as a sign of seal failure in double- or triple-pane windows 2.

The fix is a new insulated glass unit, not cleaning or drying the old one. Whether a failed seal is covered depends on the window's own warranty, so check the manufacturer's warranty and the installer's paperwork before paying for a replacement unit. Condensation on the room side of the glass is a different issue, covered in window condensation.

What moves the price of replacement glass

Number of panes

HomeGuide reports $150 to $400 for single-pane, $300 to $800 for double-pane and $500 to $1,200 for triple-pane glass replacement 2. Angi reports $150 to $400, $300 to $900 and $400 to $1,000 for the same three 1.

Glass type

Angi reports per-window ranges of $150 to $400 for float glass, $200 to $600 for tempered, $300 to $1,000 for low-E and $400 to $900 for argon-filled 1. HomeGuide reports $300 to $750 for tempered and $350 to $950 for low-E 2. For what low-E and gas fills do, see low-E glass explained.

Size and access

HomeGuide reports $150 to $350 for a small pane under 24 by 24 inches, $350 to $600 for a medium one and $600 to $1,200 or more for a large one, plus $150 to $400 for large windows on a second or third story 2.

Labor

Angi says glass pros charge $50 to $75 an hour and most replacements take one to two hours, or $50 to $150 in labor on top of the glass 1. HomeGuide says some contractors charge a minimum of $100 to $150 or more 2.

Before you call

Note the window type, the size of the glass, whether it is single, double or triple pane, and any markings etched in a corner of the glass. Ask each company whether the price is for the glass unit alone or installed, whether it matches the original glass package, and what warranty comes with the new unit. Then ask about the company: Is the installer licensed in your state? Our guide on how to choose a window installer lists the rest. If the window needs more than glass, you can compare quotes from window installers.
