Window Repair Cost: Common Repairs Priced Side by Side
What common window repairs cost in two national cost guides, side by side and dated, why their ranges differ, and when a repair stops making sense.
Most window repairs cost a few hundred dollars or less. Fixr reports an average of about $400, with most projects between $150 and $600 (updated January 21, 2026) 1. This Old House reports a typical range of $100 to $600 and a national average of $392, based on estimates from Angi (updated June 23, 2026) 2. Small jobs such as a sash cord or a latch sit at the bottom of those ranges; broken glass, rot and flashing sit at the top.
A repair stops making sense when its quote approaches the price of a new window, when the same window keeps failing, or when the frame itself is rotted. Fixr puts an average replacement at about $800 per window, and as high as $3,000 1. The table below shows each common repair in both guides, so you can see where your quote falls.

Fixr labels its repair tables as including labor 1. This Old House notes that its cost data comes from Angi estimates unless otherwise noted 2, so its column reflects Angi's figures.
Why the two columns differ
The guides group their repairs differently. Fixr's broken glass range runs to $2,000 while This Old House's stops at $400 12; a range that wide may take in larger panes or specialty glass that the narrower one leaves out. Fixr's stuck-sash row covers cords, balances and springs together; This Old House prices the sash cord alone 12. The methods differ too: Fixr says it gathers figures from pricing databases, contractors and industry experts 1. For more on reading survey figures, see how the cost surveys differ.
Repairs by window type and frame material
Fixr also prices repairs by window type, with labor included 1:
By frame material, Fixr reports $175 to $800 for wood, $200 to $500 for aluminum, $200 to $800 for vinyl, $300 to $1,000 for fiberglass and $400 to $900 for composite 1. It says repair technicians typically charge $30 to $90 an hour, depending on location and experience 1.
Fogged glass and glass replacement
Fog between the panes means the seal on the insulated glass unit has failed. Fixr's glass guide puts seal replacement at $70 to $120, glass repair at $100 to $500 and glass replacement at $300 to $880, with a national average of $375 (updated August 29, 2025) 4. The window glass replacement cost article covers glass by type and size.
Frame repair and rot
Fixr's frame repair guide reports about $300 per unit on average, with a typical range of $250 to $500 (updated August 29, 2025) 3. By repair type, it lists $175 to $275 for dry rot, $100 to $250 for a rotted sash, $200 to $300 for a rotted sill and $200 to $700 for a rotted frame 3. It adds that when rot is present, it is generally better to replace the affected wood entirely 3. If only the sash is rotted, a new sash in the old frame may be an option; see window sash replacement.
When a repair stops making sense
Both guides describe a similar line. Fixr says replacement may make more sense when a window is near the end of its life or has repeated problems such as leaks and drafts, and when repair quotes approach the price of a new window 1. This Old House suggests trying a repair first unless a professional says replacement is necessary, and says replacement is often the more reliable option when damage is widespread, affects performance or keeps getting worse 2.
A simple test, as our own arithmetic: if a flashing repair at the top of Fixr's range ($600) is quoted on a window that Fixr's average puts at about $800 to replace, the repair is 75% of a new window's price 1. At that point a replacement quote for the same window is worth getting before you decide. That test cannot see the age of the window or whether the frame is sound, which the repair or replace windows guide works through symptom by symptom.
Before paying for a repair, check whether the failed part is still under the window's warranty; window warranties explained covers what those usually include. Age matters too; how long do windows last lists lifespans by material. For screens alone, see window screen replacement.
Getting a repair quoted
Ask the company what caused the problem, which part it will replace, whether the price includes labor and disposal, and whether the work affects any remaining warranty. A glass shop and a window replacement company may quote very different fixes for the same symptom, so it can help to ask one of each. Is the company licensed where you live? Our guide on how to choose a window installer lists what else to check. If replacement is on the table, you can compare quotes from window installers.
