Window Replacement Cost: What Four Cost Surveys Report, Side by Side

Replacement windows cost a few hundred to a few thousand dollars each, installed. Five dated cost sources side by side, why they differ, and what moves a quote.

A replacement window usually costs from a few hundred dollars to a couple of thousand installed, depending on the survey you read and the window. HomeAdvisor reports a normal range of $300 to $2,100 per window with an average of $850 (updated June 17, 2026) 5. Fixr reports about $800 per window, typically $450 to $1,200 (updated January 21, 2026) 7. HomeGuide reports $450 to $1,500 per window, with a national average of $900 (February 5, 2026) 8. Angi reports about $750 per window (updated October 15, 2026) 6.

For a whole house, the totals depend mostly on how many windows you replace. Angi puts the typical project at $3,436 to $11,838, with a national average of $7,348 from 17,857 projects 6. HomeGuide reports $4,500 to $22,500 for 10 to 15 windows 8. The 2025 Cost vs. Value report prices one specific job, ten vinyl windows, at $22,073 nationally 12. These numbers measure different things, and the rest of this article explains how, so you can read your own quotes against them.

Why the surveys disagree

The spread is not an error. It comes from three differences in how each source builds its number.

Method. HomeAdvisor and Angi say they survey their own customers after a project and pair that with Bureau of Labor Statistics data, journals, market studies and expert interviews; Angi says it has surveyed over 10,000 customers 56. HomeGuide says its data comes from research and project costs reported by its members 8. Fixr says it draws on pricing databases, contractors and industry experts, without giving a sample size 7. Cost vs. Value builds a cost index from BLS consumer and producer price data, BEA spending data and installer wages, then uses local building cost data from Verisk's XactRemodel estimating tool 4.

What the job includes. Cost vs. Value prices a defined job: replace ten 3-by-5-foot double-hung windows with insulated, low-E, simulated-divided-light units, a custom-color exterior finish on the vinyl version and clad wood on the wood version, with exterior trim to match 23. That is a higher specification than a basic white vinyl unit, which is one reason its total sits above the survey ranges. HomeGuide's count table assumes single-hung windows in basic aluminum or vinyl frames 8, and Angi's count table assumes standard double-hung windows 6.

Year. The Cost vs. Value figures are from its 2025 report 1. The four surveys were updated between January and October 2026 5678.

What moves the price of a window

Number of windows

Totals rise with every window, but the surveys describe a per-window cost that may fall when more are done at once. HomeAdvisor says one trip spreads transportation and minimum fees across more units 5. Fixr says many installers discount per window on larger orders, and that the size of the discount varies 7. The whole-house cost article breaks this down by count.

Frame material

The material is one of the larger swings. Fixr reports per-window ranges, installed, of $350 to $800 for vinyl, $400 to $1,500 for fiberglass and $600 to $2,000 for wood 7. HomeGuide reports $200 to $1,500 for vinyl, $400 to $2,000 for fiberglass and $800 to $3,800 for wood, installed 8. HomeAdvisor lists unit prices for the window alone, vinyl $100 to $900 and fiberglass $500 to $1,500 5, and Angi lists the same ranges per window without saying whether installation is included 6. See vinyl window replacement cost and the frame materials comparison.

Window type

Single-hung and picture windows sit at the low end and bay and bow windows at the high end. HomeGuide reports $350 to $2,500 installed for a double-hung window and $2,000 to $6,000 for a bay window 8. Details: double-hung window cost, bay and bow window cost and egress window cost.

Glass package

DOE's consumer guide describes efficient windows as double or triple panes with an inert gas such as argon between them, low-emissivity coatings, insulating spacers and better frames 9. It explains the two numbers on the label: U-factor, which usually runs from 0.20 to 1.20 for windows, where lower insulates better, and the solar heat gain coefficient, from 0 to 1, where lower lets in less solar heat 9. ENERGY STAR sets its criteria by climate zone, using ratings from the National Fenestration Rating Council 10. On price, Fixr reports $450 to $2,000 for a double-pane window and $1,000 to $4,000 for triple-pane, and says tempered or laminated glass upgrades can add $100 to $800 per window 7. Full-frame or insert installation

An insert (also called retrofit or pocket) window goes into the existing frame; a full-frame replacement removes the frame too. HomeAdvisor puts labor at $100 to $300 per window for retrofit and $150 to $800 for full-frame 5. Angi reports $100 to $300 for retrofit and $180 to $1,500 for full-frame 6. An insert only makes sense when the old frame is sound, which HomeAdvisor and Angi both note 56. See full-frame vs insert replacement.

Home age and hidden damage

HomeAdvisor says older homes can double or triple the project price, through non-standard sizes, rotted trim and counterweight removal 5. Angi reports $100 to $500 more per window in older or historic homes and $100 to $2,000 or more for structural repairs found during the job 6.

Labor, permits and region

Labor is roughly a third of the bill in two of the surveys: Fixr says about 30% on average 7, HomeGuide 25% to 35% 8. HomeAdvisor reports $40 to $65 an hour, higher in large metro areas 5. Permits, when one is needed, run $50 to $300 per HomeAdvisor 5; whether your job needs one is set by your local building department, covered in do you need a permit to replace windows. State-specific notes: Texas, Florida, California, Arizona, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Louisiana, Oregon, Massachusetts, Washington.

Replacing only the glass

When the frame and sash are sound and only the glass is broken or fogged, glass-only work costs less. HomeAdvisor reports a windowpane replacement at $180 to $410 5, and Angi lists window glass at $200 to $400 per window 6. The window glass replacement cost article covers when that is possible. If you are deciding between repair and replacement, see repair or replace windows.

How we know these prices

Every price in this article comes from a published source that we read on October 22, 2026, and each is labeled with the source and its own date. We do not blend the surveys into one number, because they measure different jobs in different ways. Cost vs. Value publishes its method 4; the four surveys describe theirs in a short note on each page 5678. All five are labeled Reported below: they are industry reports, not official records. None of them prices your home. A written quote from an installer who has measured your openings is the only figure that does. Our methodology page explains how we choose and check sources.

What to ask before you compare quotes

Ask each company the same questions so the quotes line up: Is it a full-frame or insert installation? Which frame material, product series and glass package? Is removal and disposal of the old windows included? Who pulls the permit, if one is needed? Is the installer licensed in your state? Our guides to choosing a window installer and comparing window quotes go through each one.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace 10 windows?

The surveys disagree by count band. HomeAdvisor reports $3,200 to $7,000 for 8 to 10 windows 5. Angi reports $6,000 to $9,000 for 8 to 12 standard double-hung windows 6. HomeGuide reports $4,500 to $15,000 for 10 single-hung windows 8. Cost vs. Value's defined ten-window vinyl job is $22,073 12.

How much does it cost to replace windows in a 2,000 sq ft house?

None of the surveys prices by square footage; they price by window count. Fixr reports $8,000 to $12,000 for a single-story home with 10 to 15 windows and $12,000 to $24,000 for a two-story home with 15 to 30 windows 7. Angi reports $7,000 to $9,000 for a three-bedroom home with 10 to 12 standard double-hung windows 6. Count your windows and use the figures for that number.

Is it cheaper to replace all windows at once?

Per window, it may be. HomeAdvisor, Fixr and HomeGuide all say replacing several at once can lower the per-window price, through shared trip and minimum fees or volume pricing 578. The total is still higher than replacing one or two.

Is it worth replacing 20-year-old windows?

Age alone does not decide it. HomeGuide lists windows more than 20 years old among its signs to look at, alongside rot, condensation between the panes, drafts and windows that are hard to open 8. HomeAdvisor reports an average window repair at $400, compared with $850 for a replacement 5, so a sound window with one problem may be a repair job.

What time of year is it least expensive to replace windows?

Fixr says spring and summer are the busiest seasons and that labor may be discounted in fall or winter because of lower demand 7. Whether that applies depends on the installer and your area.
