Window Warranties Explained: Product, Labor, Glass and Lifetime Terms
What a window warranty covers - product vs. labor vs. glass breakage, what "lifetime" means, and transfer rules, as six manufacturers word their own warranties.
A window warranty is usually several warranties in one document: one for the frame and other non-glass parts, one for the sealed glass unit, sometimes one for glass breakage, and separate terms for who pays the labor to fix a covered defect. "Lifetime" rarely means the life of the window. In the documents below that use the word, it means for as long as the original buyer owns, and often lives in, the home, with shorter terms for later owners.
The installer's own warranty on the work is a separate promise again. This article sets out what the parts of a window warranty mean, then how six manufacturers word their current terms on their own pages. We are not affiliated with the manufacturers named.
The parts of a window warranty
Product (materials and workmanship). Covers defects in the frame, sash, hardware, screens and weatherstripping. Frame material usually gets the longest term; screens and weatherstripping often the shortest.
Insulated glass unit (seal). Covers a failed seal that lets moisture or film form between the panes and blocks the view. Terms are often stated in years, sometimes with a reduced or prorated share after a point.
Glass breakage. Covers broken glass from accidents. Most standard warranties exclude it; some include it, sell it as an upgrade, or include it for a few years only.
Labor. A product warranty may send replacement parts but leave the cost of removing and reinstalling them to the owner, or cover labor only for the first few years. This is the line people most often miss.
Installation (the installer's warranty). Covers leaks, drafts and operation problems caused by how the window was set, flashed and sealed. It comes from the company that installed the windows, not the manufacturer, and its length varies by company. Manufacturer warranties commonly exclude damage from installation that does not follow their instructions 5.
Transferability. Whether coverage moves to the next owner if you sell, and on what terms. Some transfer in full, some drop to a shorter term, some end.
Six manufacturers, side by side
The table summarizes each manufacturer's current document for one representative product family, as its own page states it on the date checked. Terms differ by series, by date of purchase and by who owns the home, so read the document that matches your product.
| Manufacturer (document) | Non-glass parts | Glass seal | Labor | Glass breakage | Transfer |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Andersen (400 Series and 200 Series, October 2023) | 10 years from purchase; 5 years for wood exteriors | 20 years from purchase | Replacement parts go to the dealer, labor not included; or factory-authorized repair; or refund | Broken glass excluded | Transferable 2 |
| Pella (vinyl, August 29, 2023 to present) | Lifetime while the original buyer owns and occupies a single-family home; 10 years otherwise | 20 years, nonlaminated glass | Included only within 2 years of sale | Accidental breakage excluded | Lifetime part not transferable; becomes a transferable 10-year term 4 |
| Marvin (Ultimate, Modern, Vivid, Elevate, Essential; effective January 12, 2026) | 10 years | 20 years up to 60 square feet; 10 years at 60 square feet and larger | Removal, installation, finishing and disposal costs not included | Not listed as covered | Fully transferable 5 |
| Milgard (replacement products, effective January 1, 2026) | Frame: lifetime while the original purchaser owns and occupies; hardware 10 years; screens and weatherstripping 1 year | 20 years | Skilled labor or shipping for claims within 10 years of manufacture, inside Milgard's service territory | Only with the optional Full Lifetime upgrade | Transferable; 10 years for later owners 7 |
| Simonton (5500, 5050, Inovo, purchases on or after July 1, 2026) | Vinyl, hardware and screens: lifetime, residential | 20 years at no charge, then prorated | Not included | 3 years on 5500 and Inovo with double-strength glass; none on 5050 | One transfer to a later residential owner 10 |
| Champion (Limited Lifetime Warranty) | Lifetime while the original purchaser owns the home | Seal failure listed as covered | Necessary labor listed as covered | Broken glass listed as covered | Lifetime term tied to the original purchaser 11 |
What each document says, in more detail
Andersen
Andersen's warranty page calls its coverage the Owner-2-Owner limited warranty and says it is transferable if you sell your home; the terms sit in separate documents for each series 1. The 400 Series and 200 Series document dated October 2023 warrants factory-installed glass against defects and seal failure for 20 years from the date of purchase from the dealer, and non-glass parts for 10 years, or 5 years for products with wood exteriors 2. For a covered defect, Andersen may send replacement parts to the dealer with labor not included, provide a factory-authorized repair at no cost, or refund the purchase price 2. The document also includes class action and jury trial waivers, with an opt-out within one year of purchase 2.
Pella
Pella's warranties page lists a separate document for each product family, and its FAQ says product warranties cover labor for the first two years from purchase and that lifetime coverage, where a warranty includes it, applies to the original purchaser in an owner-occupied single-family home 3. The FAQ also says installing the product yourself does not void the warranty if Pella's installation instructions are followed 3. The vinyl document, which covers the 250 Series, Encompass, Hurricane Shield and Defender lines, gives non-glass parts a nontransferable lifetime term while the buyer owns and occupies the home; if the buyer sells or stops living in the home within 10 years, it becomes a transferable 10-year term counted from the original date of sale by Pella or its dealer 4. Nonlaminated glass has a transferable 20-year term and laminated glass a 10-year term, with labor included only in the first 2 years 4. The document includes an arbitration agreement with a 90-day opt-out 4.
Marvin
Marvin's limited warranty, effective January 12, 2026, covers the Ultimate, Modern, Vivid, Elevate and Essential lines bought from an authorized dealer, extends to the owner of the building where the products were first installed, and is fully transferable 5. Standard insulating glass is covered against seal failure for 20 years in sizes up to 60 square feet and 10 years above that, and hardware and other non-glass parts for 10 years 5. Removal, installation, finishing, refinishing and disposal costs are not included, and installation that does not follow Marvin's instructions, industry practice and building codes is excluded 5.
Milgard
Milgard's page lists a Lifetime Limited Warranty and an optional Full Lifetime Warranty, both effective January 1, 2026, with the upgrade available on the V400 Tuscany, V300 Trinsic and C700 series and some territory restrictions 6. The replacement-product document gives the frame a lifetime term for the original purchaser while they own and occupy the home, and 10 years for all other owners, including later buyers 7. Insulated glass is covered for 20 years, hardware for 10 years, and weatherstripping and screens for 1 year, all counted from the manufacture date 7. Milgard provides skilled labor or shipping for claims within 10 years of manufacture when the home is in its service territory, and claims are due within 30 days of finding the problem 7.
The Full Lifetime upgrade must be bought at the time of sale 8. It covers frame, glass seal, hardware and glass breakage for the original owner's lifetime while they own and live in the home, includes labor during the coverage period, and cannot be transferred 8.
Simonton
Simonton's warranty page lists documents by collection and date of purchase, including a lifetime limited warranty for the 5500, 5050 and Inovo collections bought on or after July 1, 2026 9. That document gives a residential owner lifetime coverage on vinyl, hardware and screens; replaces a failed insulating glass unit at no charge for 20 years and on a prorated schedule after that; and covers glass breakage for 3 years on 5500 windows and Inovo doors bought with double-strength glass, with no breakage coverage listed for 5050 windows 10. Labor is not included 10. A residential owner may transfer the coverage once to a later residential owner, with notice to Simonton within 30 days of the sale; glass terms transfer only for the balance of their stated period 10.
Champion
Champion's window warranty page describes a Limited Lifetime Warranty that covers installation, parts, labor and materials, and lists broken glass, seal failure, necessary labor, screen repair and waste removal as covered at no additional charge 11. A footnote says the warranty applies to qualifying products as long as the original purchaser owns the home, and refers buyers to the store for details 11. Because the page says the warranty covers installation as well as parts, it speaks to both the product and the work 11.
Questions to ask about any window warranty
- Which document applies to the exact series and purchase date on my quote? Can I have a copy before I sign?
- When does the clock start: purchase, manufacture, delivery or installation?
- Is labor covered for a defect, and for how long?
- Is glass breakage covered, and is it an upgrade?
- What does "lifetime" mean in this document, and what happens to coverage if I sell or rent out the home?
- Do I need to register the windows, or notify the manufacturer within a set time of a sale or a problem?
- What does your own installation warranty cover, for how long, and is it in the contract?
How to choose a window installer puts these alongside the license and contract questions, and the quote comparison template has a row for each warranty. FindAWindowPro is a lead-generation service and is paid by window companies when a reader requests quotes; you can compare quotes from window installers and ask each for its warranty documents.
