Window Installation Labor Cost: Share and Drivers
What labor adds to a replacement window's price in the cost surveys, and why upper floors, full-frame work, rot repair and masonry openings raise it.
Labor is usually a minority share of a replacement window's price, and the surveys do not agree on how big. Fixr reports labor of $150 to $300 for smaller windows and up to $800 for large bay or bow windows, and says labor makes up about 30% of the total on average (updated January 21, 2026) 1. Modernize reports labor of $149 per window, about 15% of its $1,047 average (updated September 22, 2026) 3. Fixr's casement guide puts labor at 20% to 40% of the total, or about $80 to $480 per window 2.
Within those ranges, the job decides the number. Upper-floor windows, full-frame removal, rotted wood and masonry openings all take more hours. The surveys name most of these as reasons labor rises 14; a manufacturer's installation booklet shows what masonry adds 7. The sections below explain why, with figures where a source gives one.
Labor figures side by side
| Source (updated) | Labor figure | Share of total |
|---|---|---|
| Fixr (January 21, 2026) | $150 to $300 smaller windows; up to $800 bay or bow | About 30% 1 |
| Fixr casement (January 30, 2026) | About $80 to $480 per window | 20% to 40% 2 |
| Modernize (September 22, 2026) | $149 per window | About 15% 3 |
Why the gap? Modernize says its average comes from 1,061,338 homeowner projects and splits into $897 for materials and $149 for labor 3; Fixr does not publish a project count. The guides also mix different window types, sizes and installation methods, and they may not draw the line between labor and materials in the same place: removal, disposal and trim can sit on either side. More on survey methods in how the cost surveys differ.
For a wage reference, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median wage of $27.44 an hour for glaziers in May 2025 6. That is what the worker earns, not what an installer charges; a company's labor price also covers the crew, vehicles, overhead and profit.
Why some windows cost more to install
Second-story and hard-to-reach windows
Height adds ladders or scaffolding, more careful handling and slower work. This Old House says second-story windows can increase labor costs (updated August 11, 2026) 4, and Fixr says upper-floor windows cost more and that large second-floor windows may need a crane 1. Andersen says a full-frame replacement on the ground floor typically takes 4 to 6 hours per window, and that upper-story windows take longer 8. Neither survey puts a dollar figure on the second-floor premium, so ask for it as a line item.
Full-frame vs. insert
An insert sets a new window inside the old frame; a full-frame replacement removes the frame, exposes the rough opening, and then needs new flashing, insulation and trim. Fixr says insert replacement is offered for a reduced fee 1, and This Old House says inserts typically cost less because installers reuse the existing frame 4. The trade-offs, and when an insert is not an option, are in full-frame vs. insert window replacement.
Rot and hidden damage
Rot is usually found only when the old window comes out. This Old House lists repairs to rot or water damage among the things that raise labor costs 4, and Fixr says structural repairs can cost a few hundred dollars or thousands, depending on the extent 1. Fixr's frame repair guide (updated August 29, 2025) gives labor-included ranges of $200 to $700 for a rotted frame, $200 to $300 for a rotted sill and $100 to $250 for a rotted sash, and reports labor at about $65 an hour for that work 5. See rotted window frame: repair or replace and window frame replacement cost.
Masonry openings
Brick, block and stucco walls take different tools and steps. Pella's installation booklet for block-frame windows lists an angle grinder, heat gun and de-glazing wheel among the tools for taking out an old frame 7. For a full-frame replacement in masonry with stucco, it has the installer set a treated wood buck in sealant, fasten it to the masonry opening and run flashing tape over the concrete sill before the window goes in 7. Each step is time. No survey we read prices it separately; retrofit windows in stucco and brick explains the options that avoid cutting the wall.
Size and type
Large units take more people. Fixr says larger casement windows require multiple technicians to position and install 2, and its top labor figure is for bay and bow windows 1. Prices by size are in window prices by size.
What a quote should show about labor
Two companies may price the same window with very different labor, depending on method and what they include. Ask each company:
- Is labor shown separately from the window itself, the way the surveys above report it?
- Which method is quoted for each opening, insert or full-frame?
- What does removal include? Taking out the old window, hauling it away, and interior and exterior trim.
- How is hidden damage priced? A per-hour rate, a per-item price, or a stop to re-quote? Fixr's $65 hourly figure for frame repair gives a reference point 5.
- Is there a charge for upper floors or special equipment?
- What does the labor warranty cover, and for how long? See window warranties explained.
Then the questions about the company: Is the installer licensed in your state, and who does the work, the company's own crew or a subcontractor? The how to choose a window installer guide covers those, and the window replacement cost guide puts labor in context with the window itself. When you have your list of openings, you can compare quotes from window installers.
