Sliding Windows: Cost, Wide Openings and Track Wear
How horizontal sliding windows work, why they suit wide openings, how track dirt and wear affect them, and what cost surveys report per window.
A sliding window, which Andersen calls a gliding window, is a double-hung window turned on its side: two sashes sit next to each other, and the moving one slides along a track 1. It opens flush with the wall instead of swinging out, which is why sliders are common next to decks, patios and walkways, in basements, over kitchen sinks and in wide, low openings 1.
On price, Fixr's sliding window guide, updated January 31, 2025, reports $525 to $955 per window with a national average of $740, including materials and labor 2. Fixr's general replacement guide, updated January 21, 2026, lists sliding windows at $700 to $1,500 3, and Modernize, updated August 12, 2026, reports $775 to $1,652 installed with an average of $1,149 4. The surveys and what sits behind them are compared below.
How a horizontal slider works
In a standard two-sash slider, one sash is active and slides; the other is fixed 1. Which side opens is chosen when the window is ordered, and Andersen describes it from the outside, so a window called left-handed slides to the right when you open it from inside 1. Some lines let both sashes open, one after the other, and a three-sash slider has a fixed center with an operable sash on each side 1.
Because nothing projects past the wall, a slider is a common choice where an outward-swinging casement or awning would get in the way of a path or deck 1. It is also easier to open over a counter than a hung window, since you push sideways instead of lifting 1.
Sliders for wide openings
A slider is wider than it is tall, so it fills a long, low opening with one unit. Andersen says one wide gliding window can fill an opening that would otherwise take several windows joined together, which can reduce costs 1. It also suggests the three-sash version as a substitute for the common living room arrangement of a picture window flanked by double-hung windows, and a bank of sliders as "ribbon" windows on modern and ranch houses 1.
Two limits come with that width. Only part of a standard slider opens at a time, because one sash stays fixed 1. And if a slider is meant to serve as a bedroom's emergency escape opening, it is the open part that gets measured, not the whole window; egress window cost covers the code sizes.
Track wear and upkeep
Andersen says a slider has fewer moving parts, which means less upkeep 1. The wear point is the track. Fixr notes that the track collects dust and dirt, and that if it is not kept clean the window gets harder to open and close 2.
Other upkeep notes from the surveys:
- Cleaning. Andersen says the outside of a gliding window has to be cleaned from outdoors, and recommends cleaning twice a year 1. Fixr adds that the screen has to come off to reach the outside of the glass 2.
- Drafts. Fixr notes that not every point of a slider is pressure-closed, so drafts in high wind are more likely 2.
- Frame care. Fixr says vinyl frames need less care than wood, which has to be sealed regularly 2.
When a slider sticks, cleaning the track is the first thing to try; if it still drags, the cause may be in the rollers, the sash or the frame. Window repair cost and repair or replace windows cover that decision.
What sliding windows cost
| Survey (date) | What the figure covers | Range | Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixr sliding window guide 2 (January 31, 2025) | Per window, materials and labor | $525–$955 | $740 |
| Fixr replacement guide 3 (January 21, 2026) | Per window, from its type table | $700–$1,500 | — |
| Modernize 4 (August 12, 2026) | Per window, installed | $775–$1,652 | $1,149 |
Why they differ: Fixr's dedicated sliding window page is the oldest of the three and says its national averages include materials and labor 2; its newer replacement guide gives a higher type range without stating for each row whether installation is included 3. Fixr says it gathers data from pricing databases, contractors and industry experts 2 3. Modernize does not describe its method on the page beyond saying its figure includes materials and labor by a window contractor, and its own labor figures do not line up: it lists installation at $300 to $800 but also puts labor at 8.1% of the cost 4. Read each range as that publisher's typical project, not a price for your opening.
Size
Fixr's figures by window area, materials and labor included 2:
| Window area | Fixr range |
|---|---|
| 3–11 sq. ft. | $433–$787 2 |
| 12–23 sq. ft. | $562–$1,022 2 |
| 24–32 sq. ft. | $727–$1,323 2 |
| 33–40 sq. ft. | $924–$1,681 2 |
Frame material
Fixr reports installed ranges of $348 to $634 for aluminum, $576 to $1,048 for vinyl and $960 to $1,748 for wood 2. Modernize lists unit-only prices from $250 to $350 for vinyl up to $550 to $650 for wood 4. Aluminum window cost and vinyl window replacement cost go further on materials.
Range of projects
Fixr puts the high end at $2,430 for a standard-sized wood triple slider 2. A slider set into a wall with no existing window adds structural work: Fixr lists $1,692 to $3,079 for an engineer to confirm the wall can carry the new opening 2.
Before you get quotes
Measure each opening, note which side should open (from outside), and decide whether you want a two-sash or three-sash unit. Ask each installer to quote the same frame material, glass and installation method, whether insert or full-frame, as explained in full-frame vs. insert window replacement. Types of windows compares sliders with hung and casement windows, and the window replacement cost guide covers the rest of the house. When you are ready, you can compare quotes from window installers.
