Aluminum Windows: Cost, Thermal Breaks and Climate
What aluminum windows cost in the surveys, how a thermal break changes a metal frame, and what to check for hot, cold and coastal homes.
Aluminum windows are among the lower-priced frame materials in the cost surveys. Fixr reports $200 to $800 per aluminum window in most cases, the bottom range in its frame material table (updated January 21, 2026) 1. This Old House says homeowners in its 2026 survey reported paying the least for aluminum, around $453 per window (updated August 11, 2026) 5.
The trade-off is heat flow. Aluminum is strong and light but conducts heat readily, which raises a window's U-factor; a thermal break, a less conductive piece joining the inner and outer parts of the frame, reduces that 6. Whether plain or thermally broken aluminum makes sense depends on your climate and on the glass you pair it with.
Aluminum window prices by source
| Source (date) | What the figure covers | Aluminum figure |
|---|---|---|
| Fixr (January 21, 2026) | Per window, frame material comparison | $200 to $800 1 |
| This Old House (August 11, 2026) | Per window, homeowner survey average | About $453 5 |
| Fixr sliding windows (January 31, 2025) | Per sliding window, labor and material | $348 to $634 3 |
| Fixr Florida (August 29, 2025) | Per window installed, standard glass | $355 to $550 4 |
| Fixr Florida (August 29, 2025) | Per window installed, impact-rated glass | $550 to $750 4 |
| Fixr buyer's guide (September 24, 2024) | Average-sized double-hung, double-pane, low-E glass | $564 to $1,026 2 |
The spread is mostly about what is being priced. A broad per-window range across all aluminum windows starts lower than a range for a double-pane, low-E double-hung unit, and impact-rated glass adds to the Florida figures 24. The surveys also differ in method and date; how the cost surveys differ explains why. For every material side by side, see the window replacement cost guide.
Plain vs. thermally broken aluminum
NFRC's Efficient Windows Collaborative site describes aluminum frames as light, strong, durable and easy to extrude into the complex shapes window parts need 6. It calls aluminum's high thermal conductance its biggest disadvantage as a frame material 6.
What a thermal break does
A thermal break splits the frame into interior and exterior pieces joined by a less conductive material 6. The collaborative says standard thermal breaks have lowered aluminum frame U-factors from roughly 2.0 to about 1.0 Btu/hr-sq. ft-°F 6. Lower is better: DOE's consumer guide says window U-factors generally range from 0.20 to 1.20 7. A frame value is not the same as a whole-window rating, so compare the U-factor on each product's NFRC label, explained in window U-factor explained.
Fixr's buyer's guide says lower-priced aluminum windows may reduce energy efficiency because aluminum transfers heat and cold more easily, and suggests looking for a thermal break 2. Its Florida guide says aluminum is not as energy-efficient unless it has a thermal break or an insulated core 4.
Condensation in cold weather
In cold climates, an uninsulated aluminum frame can get cold enough for moisture or frost to collect on its inside surfaces, which the collaborative says spurred the development of better insulating aluminum frames 6. If you live where winters are cold, that is the main reason to ask whether a quoted aluminum window is thermally broken. The window condensation article covers the indoor-humidity side.
Aluminum in hot climates
In hot climates, the collaborative says a higher-performance glazing system usually matters more than improving frame insulation, because solar gain is often the bigger concern 6. DOE's guide measures that with the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, which ranges from 0 to 1; the lower the number, the less solar heat the window lets in 7. For warmer climates, DOE's orientation table points to a low SHGC and a low U-factor on south, east and west windows 7.
So in a hot, sunny place, the glass package (low-E coatings and a low SHGC) may do more for comfort than the choice between plain and thermally broken frames. See low-E glass explained and energy-efficient windows explained.
Aluminum near the coast
Salt air is the coastal concern. Window + Door, the National Glass Association's publication, names salt spray and deposits among the main drivers of corrosion on exterior aluminum, and says airborne chloride from ocean spray has been detected more than 50 miles inland (May 10, 2023) 8.
The finish is what protects the metal. The same article points to two industry specifications 8:
- AAMA 2605 for 70 percent PVDF resin coatings, whose testing includes more than 4,000 hours of accelerated salt spray exposure 8.
- AAMA 611 for Class I anodized finishes, tested with 3,000 hours of accelerated salt spray exposure 8.
It also notes that cut ends, seams, areas that trap water and blocked weep holes are where corrosion tends to start, and it recommends rinsing salt deposits off regularly with clean water or mild soap, while strong alkaline or acidic cleaners and abrasive scrapers can damage the finish 8. Ask an installer which finish specification a quoted coastal window meets. If you are also looking at storm protection, see hurricane impact window cost.
Other trade-offs
- Denting. Fixr says aluminum offers less insulation than vinyl and can dent from impact 1.
- Heat and cold cycles. Fixr's buyer's guide says aluminum can withstand extreme temperature changes without warping or cracking 2.
- Repair costs. Fixr puts aluminum window repairs at $200 to $500 9, and aluminum frame repair at $250 to $500 10. More on repairs in window repair cost.

Comparing aluminum quotes
Ask each company whether the frame is thermally broken, which glass package it includes and that package's U-factor and SHGC, the finish specification if you are near the coast, and whether removal and disposal are included. Then ask about the company: Is the installer licensed in your state, and what does the labor warranty cover? Our guide on how to choose a window installer goes through the rest. When you have your window list, you can compare quotes from window installers.
