Impact Windows: What the Rating Means and the Cost
What an impact rating on a window means, how Florida product approval and Miami-Dade approval work, and what cost surveys report per impact window.
An impact window is a window that has been tested to withstand strikes from windborne debris followed by repeated wind pressure 4 5. Fixr describes impact windows as tempered and laminated to help prevent shattering 7. "Impact rated" means the product passed specific tests, and in Florida that is backed by a state or local product approval you can look up 1 2 3.
On price, Fixr's Florida guide reports $750 to $3,500 per impact-resistant window, against $355 to $1,500 per standard replacement window on the same page 7. The difference between those two ranges is the per-window premium the surveys show; the details are below.
What an impact rating means
An impact window is rated by testing, not by its description. The tests that come up most often in Florida approvals are these:
- Large missile impact. Under Florida's TAS 201 test, a 9 pound piece of 2 by 4 lumber is fired at the specimen at 50 or 80 feet per second 4. The same standard has a small missile test with 2 gram steel balls at 130 feet per second 4. TAS 201 covers windows, doors, skylights, shutters and other parts of the building envelope intended for the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone 4.
- Cyclic pressure. TAS 203 applies wind pressure in positive and negative directions, 4,500 cycles each way across four pressure stages, as the cyclic test that accompanies TAS 201 5.
- ASTM E1996. This specification covers exterior windows, glazed curtain walls, doors and impact protective systems; it defines missile sizes and impact speeds by wind zone and includes a cyclic pressure loading table 6.
An approval applies to the product described in it, so check that the size and configuration being quoted match the approval document, not only the brochure.
Florida product approval
Our Florida page covers the state's product approval program and the building code sections on windborne debris. The detail that matters most when comparing impact window quotes is which kind of approval a product carries. DBPR's building codes FAQ explains them (DBPR building codes FAQ) 1:
- Statewide approval can be used throughout Florida.
- Local approval is granted by a local jurisdiction and is limited to that jurisdiction. A Miami-Dade approval is a local approval that can only be used in Miami-Dade.
- A state approval marked "approved for High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ)" can be used in Miami-Dade as well as the rest of the state.
The same FAQ says state approval is optional alongside local approval 1. You can search state-approved products on the Florida Building Commission's site under "Find a Product or Application" (Florida product approval) 2. Your building department can tell you which approvals it accepts for your address.
Miami-Dade approval
Miami-Dade County's Product Control Section receives applications for product approval and reviews and issues approvals or denials for building construction materials, mainly windows, exterior glazing, wall cladding, roofing, exterior doors, skylights, glass block, siding and shutters (Miami-Dade product approval) 3. Its Product Approval Search lets users look up product approvals, certificates and listings 3, so a Miami-Dade approval can be checked there.
Ask each installer for the Florida product approval number or the Miami-Dade approval for the exact window being quoted, including its size, and look it up yourself.
What impact windows cost
The surveys do not report one number, and they measure different things. All figures below are from Fixr, on three pages with different dates.
| Fixr page (date) | What the figure covers | Range |
|---|---|---|
| Florida window cost (updated August 29, 2025) | Impact-resistant window, per window, Florida | $750–$3,500 7 |
| Florida window cost (updated August 29, 2025) | Standard replacement window, per window, Florida | $355–$1,500 7 |
| Florida impact window guide (April 21, 2026) | Impact windows installed, per square foot | $40–$100+ 8 |
| Florida impact window guide (April 21, 2026) | Whole house | $15,000–$50,000+ 8 |
| National window cost (updated January 21, 2026) | Standard replacement, per window; average $800 | $450–$1,200 9 |
The same Florida impact guide prices a standard 22-1/2 by 46-1/2 inch impact glass window at about $667 for the unit alone, with installation and materials extra 8. On its national page, Fixr says tempered or laminated glass upgrades, suggested for areas prone to tornadoes and hurricanes, can add $100 to $800 per window 9; that is a glass upgrade, not necessarily a tested impact unit.
Why the numbers differ: the Florida page's figures are per window and installed; the guide's per-square-foot and whole-house figures depend on how many and how large the openings are; and the national page is an average for standard windows across the country 7 8 9. More on how the cost surveys build their figures is in how the cost surveys differ.
What moves the price
- Size. Fixr's Florida table runs from $350 to $1,500 for a small impact window to $1,000 to $6,000 for a large one 7.
- Frame material. Its installed ranges for impact windows are $550 to $750 for aluminum, $750 to $1,200 for vinyl, $750 to $1,500 for fiberglass, $800 to $2,100 for wood and $1,000 to $5,000 for steel 7. For aluminum frames in general, see aluminum window cost.
- Style. Fixr lists $325 to $1,825 for an impact picture window and $845 to $1,850 for a casement 7. For fixed windows in general, see picture window cost.
- Permit. Fixr's guide lists typical window permit fees by county, for example $200 to $500 or more in Miami-Dade and $150 to $450 in Broward 8. Ask who pulls the permit and whether the fee is in the quote; do you need a permit to replace windows covers the general rules.
Impact windows or shutters
Impact windows are the protection themselves, so they are in place whenever the window is closed. Shutters or panels protect ordinary windows only once they are closed or put up, and they need storing between storms 8. Fixr's guide reports $7 to $15 per square foot installed for storm panels, $15 to $25 for accordion shutters and $25 to $60 for motorized roll-down shutters, against $40 to $100 or more for impact windows 8. Which fits is a design and budget choice. Florida's product approval program covers both windows and shutters 1.
Before you get quotes
List each opening with its width and height, note which ones open, and ask every installer to quote the same frame material and the same approved product line. Ask for the approval number, the design pressure the product is approved for at your size, and whether removal, permit and stucco or trim repair are included. How to choose a window installer covers what a written quote should list, and window replacement cost covers the rest of the house. When you are ready, you can compare quotes from window installers.
