Fiberglass Windows Cost: The Premium Over Vinyl

What fiberglass windows cost per window in four cost guides, how far above vinyl each one puts them, and what the frame material changes.

A fiberglass window typically costs several hundred dollars to about $1,500, and each cost guide cited here that reports both materials puts it above vinyl. How far above depends on the guide. This Old House's 2026 homeowner survey found fiberglass at $564 per window on average against $472 for vinyl (August 11, 2026) 2. Fixr reports $400 to $1,500 per fiberglass window and $350 to $800 for vinyl (January 21, 2026) 1. Modernize's guides put fiberglass between $400 and $1,500 or more, with three pages giving three different ranges 345.

What the higher price buys, according to a manufacturer, is a frame that expands and shrinks at close to the rate of the glass and is stronger than vinyl 78. How much that matters may depend on your climate and the color you want. The vinyl vs fiberglass windows article compares the two materials in full; this one is about the price.

What the premium looks like

This Old House's averages put fiberglass $92 above vinyl per window, about 19% more (our subtraction and division of its two averages) 2. That survey covers 1,000 homeowners who completed a window replacement project in 2026 2, so it reflects what people paid, across window types and sizes. Fixr's ranges start close together ($400 and $350) but its fiberglass range reaches nearly twice as high ($1,500 against $800) 1. Modernize's calculator shows no overlap at all: its lowest fiberglass figure is above its highest vinyl figure 3.

Why the guides differ

The guides do not say the same thing about what is included. Modernize's comparison page labels its ranges as installed 5; its calculator says its national average includes material and labor, and bases its ranges by frame material on standard-size double-hung windows 3. Window size, type and glass package vary across every survey, and a fiberglass casement is not priced like a fiberglass single-hung. For how the surveys collect their numbers, see how the cost surveys differ.

Fiberglass by window type and job size

Fixr's fiberglass guide (July 11, 2024) gives materials-only prices per window 6:

Window typePrefabCustom
Single-hung$360 to $655$615 to $1,120 6
Double-hung$720 to $1,310$1,231 to $2,240 6
Casement$720 to $1,310$1,231 to $2,240 6
Picture$792 to $1,440$1,350 to $2,500 6
Bay$1,188 to $2,160$2,030 to $3,700 6

For a whole job, the same guide reports $6,160 to $11,200 nationally, with about $8,500 for ten prefab double-hung, double-pane fiberglass replacement windows with low-E glass 6. It does not clearly say whether those totals include labor. On labor, Modernize reports $70 to $150 per fiberglass window installed and a split of about 71% materials and 29% labor 4; Fixr's guide lists $100 to $150 per window for jobs of one to four windows, falling to $80 to $125 for 20 or more 6. Our article on cost to replace one window covers that small-job effect.

What the frame material changes, according to the manufacturers

These are manufacturers describing their own products, not independent test results:

  • Movement with temperature. Marvin says its Ultrex fiberglass expands at virtually the same rate as glass 7, and that the glass and a fiberglass frame expand and shrink at similar rates 8. Marvin says this helps its windows resist leaks, seal failures and stress cracks 7.
  • Strength. Marvin says Ultrex is eight times stronger than vinyl 78.
  • Heat, cold and color. Marvin writes that vinyl can soften in the sun, that dark vinyl exteriors can sag in heat, and that most vinyl windows are white or buff 8. It also says vinyl can become brittle in very cold temperatures 8.
  • Quality varies. Marvin advises avoiding fiberglass with high concentrations of plastics and vinyl, or with sawdust and wood fillers, because fiberglass is a manufactured material with a wide range of quality 8.
  • Vinyl's advantage. The same Marvin page says vinyl windows are less costly and low-maintenance, and decent insulators if the frames are not hollow 8.

Modernize adds a caution on the other side: most fiberglass frames are hollow inside, which reduces their energy efficiency, and foam-filled frames can improve it 4.

How much the frame matters for energy

The frame is a minority of the window. The Efficient Windows Collaborative, run by NFRC, says the sash and frame make up 10% to 30% of the total area of a window unit, enough that frame properties significantly influence the whole window's performance 9. The glass makes up the rest. That is why the Department of Energy advises looking for whole-unit U-factors and solar heat gain coefficients rather than center-of-glass figures 10: the whole-unit number includes the frame. Ask for the label numbers on each fiberglass and vinyl window you are quoted. The window U-factor explained article shows how to read them.

Getting fiberglass quoted

Not every installer carries fiberglass windows, so ask early. When you ask for quotes, ask for the product line, the glass package with its label numbers, and the installation method for each window, and ask one company to price both fiberglass and vinyl for the same openings. That gives you the premium for your own house rather than a national average. Is the installer licensed where you live? The how to choose a window installer guide lists what else to check, and the window replacement cost guide covers every other cost driver, and window frame materials compared covers wood and composite too. When you are ready, you can compare quotes from window installers.
