Vinyl vs. Fiberglass Windows: Cost, Expansion, Paint and Lifespan
Fiberglass windows usually cost more than vinyl and move less with heat and cold. A side-by-side on cost, expansion, paint, looks and stated lifespan, with sources.
Fiberglass windows usually cost more than vinyl, and in exchange the frame holds its shape better through heat and cold and, Pella says, offers more design versatility than vinyl 6. Vinyl costs less, needs almost no upkeep and is the more common choice. HomeAdvisor reports $100 to $900 for a vinyl window unit and $500 to $1,500 for fiberglass, before installation (updated June 17, 2026) 1. Neither material is the right answer for every house.
The difference that matters most is how each frame reacts to temperature. Vinyl is a plastic and moves more as it warms and cools; fiberglass is glass fibers in resin and moves at close to the rate of the glass it holds. How much that matters depends on your climate, the color you want and how long you plan to keep the windows.
Side by side
| Vinyl | Fiberglass | |
|---|---|---|
| Per window, HomeAdvisor and Angi | $100 to $900 | $500 to $1,500 1 2 |
| Per window, Fixr | $350 to $800 | $400 to $1,500 3 |
| Installed per window, HomeGuide | $200 to $1,500 | $400 to $2,000 4 |
| Movement with temperature | More | Close to glass, per Marvin 8 |
| Paint later | Voids Milgard's warranty 9 | Factory finish; fewer colors than wood 6 |
| Upkeep | Cleaning | Cleaning 6 7 |
| Lifespan as Pella states it | 20 to 40 years | Up to 50 years 5 |
The surveys are dated differently and measure different things. HomeAdvisor labels its ranges as the window unit alone, Angi gives the same ranges as an average cost per window without saying whether installation is included, HomeGuide labels its figures as installed, and Fixr does not say, so compare within a row, not across rows. HomeGuide's own text gives vinyl as $350 to $1,500 installed, while its table shows $200 to $1,500 4. Angi's material ranges (updated October 15, 2026) are the same as HomeAdvisor's 2. Fixr's figures were updated January 21, 2026 3 and HomeGuide's are dated February 5, 2026 4.
Cost
Every survey puts fiberglass above vinyl, though the ranges overlap. At the low end, a basic fiberglass window can cost less than a high-end vinyl one. Pella, which makes both, says fiberglass costs more up front than vinyl and that fewer manufacturers offer it 6. Fewer makers may also mean fewer local installers who carry it, so ask when you collect quotes.
For vinyl prices on their own, see the vinyl window replacement cost article; the window replacement cost guide covers whole-house totals.
Expansion and strength
This is the main technical difference. Marvin says its Ultrex fiberglass expands at virtually the same rate as glass, which it says helps its windows resist leaks, seal failures and stress cracks 8. Pella says its fiberglass is tested from -40°F to 160°F and resists warping, denting and corrosion 6. Both are manufacturers describing their own products.
On vinyl, Milgard's FAQ warns that vinyl surface temperatures above 150 degrees F can cause distortion, in the context of units left lying flat in direct sun before installation 9. Angi notes that lower-end vinyl can warp in extreme heat 2. Construction varies by product line; Pella describes its vinyl frames as multi-chambered with optional foam insulation and fully welded sashes and frames 7.
Paint and color
Vinyl frames come in factory colors. Milgard says that painting its vinyl windows counts as an alteration to the finish and voids the warranty 9, so choose the color carefully at the start.
Fiberglass also comes with a factory finish. Pella says its fiberglass never needs painting or refinishing and is offered in solid and two-tone colors, including black, but has fewer color options than wood 6. If you want a custom color or a historic profile, Pella points to wood instead 6.
Energy performance
HomeAdvisor describes both as much better insulators than aluminum 1. Neither the frame material nor a marketing claim tells you how a specific window performs; the label does. The U.S. Department of Energy advises comparing whole-unit U-factors and solar heat gain coefficients, which include the frame, rather than center-of-glass figures 11. Ask for the label numbers on the exact vinyl and fiberglass windows you are quoted. The energy-efficient windows explained guide covers what the numbers mean.
Lifespan and warranty
Pella's FAQ states that vinyl windows typically last 20 to 40 years and fiberglass up to 50 years 5. Those are a manufacturer's general figures, not a promise for any product. Pella also says lifespan depends on material quality, climate, installation, how often the window is opened and maintenance 5.
Warranties are a separate question. Pella says its vinyl windows in owner-occupied single-family homes carry a limited lifetime warranty 7. Milgard offers a lifetime limited warranty and an optional full lifetime warranty on some lines, including its C700 fiberglass series and two vinyl series 10. Read the actual terms: what "lifetime" means, whether labor is covered and whether it transfers to a buyer. The window warranties explained article goes through them.
Downsides of each
Vinyl: more movement with temperature, painting may void the warranty, and frames may be thicker than fiberglass for the same opening, as Pella notes when it says homeowners choose fiberglass for slimmer frames and larger glass 5.
Fiberglass: higher up-front cost, fewer manufacturers and fewer colors than wood 6.
Which fits your house
Vinyl may suit you if the budget is tight, the climate is moderate and you like the standard colors. Pella's FAQ makes the same point: homeowners focused on keeping up-front costs low often choose vinyl 5. Fiberglass may suit you if the house sees large temperature swings, you want a dark color or slim frames, or you plan to stay for many years 6.
The frame is only part of the window. Glass, installation quality and whether the old frame is sound often matter as much. For all frame types, including wood and composite, see window frame materials compared. When you are ready to see prices for your own windows, compare quotes from window installers and ask each company to quote both materials.
