Replacing Windows and Doors Together: Quotes and Timing

When it makes sense to replace patio or entry doors along with your windows, how door quotes and lead times differ, and the ENERGY STAR criteria for doors.

Replacing a patio or entry door at the same time as your windows makes the most sense when the door has the same problems the windows do: drafts, a failed glass seal, rot at the sill, or a frame that no longer matches the house. One crew, one measure visit and one set of matching products can then cover every opening. When the door is sound, nothing about a window project requires replacing it too.

The door portion of the quote is priced and scheduled differently. Replacing an existing sliding patio door costs around $700 to $2,400 on average in Fixr's cost guide (updated January 31, 2025) 5, entry door installation $975 to $1,773 6, and a single window $450 to $1,200 (updated January 21, 2026) 7. Doors often come from a different product line with its own lead time, and they meet their own ENERGY STAR criteria. The sections below go through each difference.

When adding the doors makes sense

The reasons are practical rather than financial:

  • The door shows the same wear as the windows. A sliding door is, in effect, a large window on a track. If the windows around it are drafty or fogged, the door glass from the same era may be too. Our article on foggy glass between panes explains why a failed seal cannot be fixed by cleaning.
  • You want the frames and finishes to match. Many window lines have a matching patio door in the same frame material and color. Ordering together keeps the exterior consistent.
  • The exterior trim is coming off anyway. A full-frame window job rebuilds trim and flashing around each opening; see full-frame vs. insert window replacement. If the door trim needs the same work, one crew can do both.
  • One schedule. One measure visit, one delivery window and one set of crew days instead of two separate projects.

Reasons to wait: a door that closes, seals and locks well; a budget that covers the windows but not the doors; or a door you plan to move or widen later, which is a different, larger job.

How door quotes differ from window quotes

What the door price includes

Fixr's sliding door figures show how much the scope matters. Its national average of $2,756 assumes a 72-by-80-inch aluminum sliding door 5. Replacing an existing sliding door costs around $700 to $2,400 on average, removal of the old door about $100 to $300, and a frame that needs replacing or repairing another $100 to $300 5. Elsewhere on the same page Fixr puts removal and disposal at $100 to $150, so ask whether removal is in the door price 5. Cutting a new opening is a different project and is not part of a replacement quote.

For entry doors, Fixr says replacement costs a few hundred dollars more than a new installation because it includes removing and hauling away the old door, and that a single pre-hung door is generally about half the price of a double or French door 6. Fixr says most installers charge $67 to $121 an hour, and the job generally takes three to seven hours 6.

Window prices, by comparison, are per opening and vary mostly with size, frame and glass; see the window replacement cost guide.

Line items to ask for

When doors are on the same quote, ask that each door be its own line with:

  • the door type (sliding, hinged patio, French, entry) and panel count;
  • frame material and glass package, with the NFRC ratings;
  • whether the price is the door unit only or installed, and whether it includes removal, disposal, new sill or threshold, trim and hardware;
  • the lead time for that door line, which may differ from the windows.

Our article on how to compare window quotes has a line-item template that works for doors too. Ask, too, whether the door glass is tempered or laminated; where tempered glass is required explains where the building code calls for safety glass and cites the section.

Lead times for doors

Doors are often built on a different line from the windows, so the slowest item may set your install date. Designer Window Supply, a San Diego distributor, posts factory production lead times by brand and line; its list was last updated October 13, 2026, and excludes shop drawing approval and shipping 8. A few lines that carry both windows and doors:

Line (San Diego list, October 13, 2026)DoorsWindows
Andersen 400 Series4 to 5 weeks 82 to 3 weeks 8
Andersen 200 Series3 to 4 weeks 84 to 5 weeks 8
Andersen A-Series and E-Series6 to 7 weeks 84 to 5 weeks 8
Marvin Ultimate9 to 11 weeks, standard and special sizes 810 to 11 weeks; 8 to 9 for double-hung, 17 to 18 for wood double-hung and casement 8

These are one regional distributor's figures on one date. They change, and another dealer may quote different numbers. The pattern is what matters: in the same brand, the door and the window may not arrive together. Ask each company whether it will install everything at once or in two visits when one item arrives first. More on schedules in window lead times.

Install time differs too. Fixr reports about seven hours to fit a sliding door 5 and three to seven hours for an entry door 6, so a door can add a day to the crew's time on site.

ENERGY STAR criteria for doors

ENERGY STAR sets door criteria by glazing level, meaning how much of the door is glass, and the ratings must come from NFRC 3. The current table (its file is dated October 2023) 1:

Door glazing levelClimate zonesU-factorSHGC
Opaque (no glass)All zones0.17 or less 1No rating 1
Half glass or lessAll zones0.23 or less 10.23 or less 1
More than half glassNorthern and North-Central0.26 or less 10.40 or less 1
More than half glassSouth-Central and Southern0.28 or less 10.23 or less 1

The same table sets air leakage at no more than 0.3 cubic feet per minute per square foot for sliding doors and 0.5 for swinging doors 1. Windows have their own table, with U-factor limits from 0.22 in the Northern zone (prescriptive path) to 0.32 in the Southern zone and air leakage of no more than 0.3 2.

What this means in practice: in the Northern zone, a mostly glass patio door may have a U-factor up to 0.26 while a window must be at 0.22 or less on the prescriptive path; in the Southern zone it runs the other way, 0.28 for the door against 0.32 for a window; and an opaque entry door is held to 0.17 in every zone 1 2. When windows and doors are quoted together, ask for both labels so you can check each against its own row. NFRC's door label shows U-factor and solar heat gain for the door's glass configuration 4. How to read the labels is in energy-efficient windows explained and the U-factor explained.

Questions to ask before you combine them

  • Is each door priced as its own line, installed, with removal and trim stated?
  • What is the lead time for the door line, and will the crew wait for it or come back?
  • Do the door's NFRC ratings meet the ENERGY STAR row for its glazing level in your zone?
  • What does the warranty say about the door, and is labor covered? See window warranties explained.
  • Is the installer licensed in your state? Our guide on how to choose a window installer covers the rest.

When you know which openings you want to include, you can compare quotes from window installers.
