Casement Windows Pros and Cons: Should You Choose Them?
The pros and cons of casement windows, room by room - seal, airflow, crank hardware care, screens inside, clearance outside and window air conditioners.
The main pros of a casement window are a tight seal, full-height airflow and easy reach: a crank opens it from across a counter, and the closed sash is pulled into the frame. The main cons are the outward swing, which needs clear space outside, crank and hinge hardware that needs periodic care, a screen that sits on the inside of the glass, and a sash that will not hold a standard window air conditioner. Fixr says casements also tend to cost more than other window types 9.
Whether those trade-offs suit you depends on where the window goes. Over a kitchen sink or in a room that needs air, the pros usually win; beside a deck or a path, or in a room you cool with a window unit, the cons may. How a casement works and what it costs are in casement windows; this article is the decision, point by point.
Pros of casement windows
A tight seal
Andersen says casement and awning windows are among its most energy-efficient windows, because a single sash leaves fewer places for air to leak, and because the seal tightens when wind blows against the closed sash 1 2. Fixr goes further and calls casements the most energy-efficient type of window 9. Those are general statements; the number to compare is on the NFRC label, which can include an Air Leakage rating that measures how much air comes in through the product 10. Ask for it on each window you are quoted, casement or not.
Airflow from top to bottom
The whole sash swings open, so air comes in along the full height of the window 1. A hung window, by contrast, opens only one sash at a time, so at most about half its height is open.
Easy to reach and to clean
Andersen says that above a sink, over a counter or anywhere you must reach to open the window, a casement is more functional than a hung window 1, and some of its lines offer power operation 2. The outside of the glass can be cleaned from indoors with the sash open 1.
Clear glass
With one sash and no meeting rail across the middle, the view is unbroken. Fixr says casements offer unobstructed views and better ventilation than any other style 9.
Cons of casement windows
Crank and hinge hardware needs care
A casement has more moving parts than a hung window: an operator (the crank and its gears), hinges and a lock. Fixr notes that casements tend to cost more because the hardware is more complex 9. The parts need attention to keep working:
- Andersen says dirt and debris on the operator, hinges or locks can make the window hard to open and close. It advises inspecting and cleaning at least once a year, every three months in coastal, industrial or agricultural areas, lubricating moving parts with a dry silicone spray (not oil-based or acetone lubricants), and tightening hinge screws, which wind can loosen over time 4.
- Marvin recommends a dry lubricant on the gears and tightening exposed hardware screws as part of an annual check 5.
On warranty, Marvin covers hardware and other non-glass parts against manufacturing defects for 10 years 6. Wear from use is a different matter: its warranty excludes normal wear and tear 6. So a crank that grinds after years of use may be a maintenance or parts question rather than a warranty claim. Our article on window repair cost covers hardware repairs.
The screen is on the inside
Because the sash swings out, the insect screen has to mount on the inside. Ritescreen, which makes screens, says casement and awning windows require interior-mounted screens by design 7. It notes that interior screens take up a little indoor space, slightly reduce the visible glass, and usually release with several clips rather than a pull tab 7. More on screens is in window screen replacement.
It needs clear space outside
The open sash projects from the wall, so Andersen advises against a casement near a walkway, porch or deck and suggests a gliding or hung window that opens flush with the wall there 3. Walk the outside of each opening and note shrubs, gutters, light fixtures or a hose bib within the swing; on a twin casement, check both swings.
No standard window air conditioner
A window air conditioner sits on a sill under a raised sash, and a casement has no sash that slides. Whynter, which makes portable air conditioners, says casement and awning windows need a different venting setup, such as a custom-cut acrylic or polycarbonate panel or a fabric seal kit around a portable unit's exhaust hose 8. If a room relies on a window unit, a hung or sliding window may be the practical choice there.
Price
Fixr says casements tend to cost more than other types, and double casements need double the hardware and more frame material 9. The survey ranges are in casement windows and the whole-house picture in window replacement cost.
Where casements fit, and where they do not
| Location | Casement? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Over a kitchen sink or counter | Often a good fit | Crank is easy to reach 1 |
| Rooms that need cross-ventilation | Often a good fit | Full-height opening 1 |
| Upper floors | Often a good fit | Outside glass cleanable from inside 1 |
| Beside a deck, porch or walkway | Consider another type | Open sash can be an obstacle 3 |
| Room cooled by a window unit | Consider another type | Needs a custom vent setup 8 |
| Traditional facade | Depends | Some casements are made to look like hung windows 1 |
Andersen makes casements styled to look like double-hung windows, so the look and the way it opens can be chosen separately 1. Single-hung vs. double-hung and awning window cost cover the nearest alternatives, and the types of windows guide covers the rest.
Casements are also made as egress windows; Fixr describes egress casements for basements that open into a window well 9. Whether a particular opening is large enough is set by the building code your area has adopted; egress window requirements explains the code text and links it.
Questions to ask before you choose
- Which way does each sash swing, and is anything outside in its path?
- What hardware is on the window, and what does the manufacturer say about caring for it?
- How does the screen attach, and how do I reach the crank?
- What are the NFRC label numbers, including Air Leakage if listed?
- What does the warranty cover on hardware, and for how long?
When you have the answers, you can compare quotes from window installers and ask each one to price casements and a hung or sliding alternative for the same openings. How to compare window quotes shows how to line them up.
